WITH reference to previous correspondence, I am directed by Secretary Sir E. Grey to transmit to you, to be laid before the Secretary of State for India, a copy of a communication from the American Ambassador† suggesting that, in accordance with the wishes of the Chinese Government, the date of meeting of the International Opium Commission should be postponed to the 1st February next.
Sir E. Grey proposes, with the concurrence of Lord Morley, to reply to Mr. Reid accepting the suggestion as far as His Majesty's Government are concerned.
The decision in the matter will be at once communicated by this Department to His Majesty's Minister at Peking, Sir C. Clementi Smith, and to Mr. Laidlaw, M.P.
